What is BMI?

Body Mass Index — a measurement calculated from height and weight to estimate body fat.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m²). For imperial units: BMI = (weight in lbs × 703) / height in inches².

BMI Categories (WHO)

  • Below 18.5 — Underweight
  • 18.5 to 24.9 — Normal weight
  • 25.0 to 29.9 — Overweight
  • 30.0 and above — Obese

Limitations

BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes may be classified as overweight despite low body fat. It does not account for age, sex, or ethnicity. Always consult a healthcare professional for health assessment.
